GOOC Pan Asia
Arguably the greatest overclocking
event yet in a country where, in some
places at least, ping pong balls are
the local currency...
“We’re defi nitely coming back here” was the verdict
for GOOC’s Pan Asia fi nals. A US$50,000 event, held
in Asia’s second largest tech mall, with great DJ’ing,
a local-celebrity host, great break dancing, fantastic
food and huge crowds on the side lines, was only the
start of it.
The nightlife in Bangkok is almost eponymous
but even it paled into insignifi cance down in Pattaya,
(which was about to be shut down because of rioting
in the face of meeting global bigwigs) which holds
the record for having more sex workers per square
kilometre than anywhere else on the planet... not
that anything bad happened. But there was certainly
plenty to see. Oh, and we beat the crap out of each
other by learning kick boxing in the gym where
The Contender was born. But back to the
overclocking part...
Aussie, Aussie, Aussie! And a Kiwi.

THE OVERCLOCKING PART
As with Europe, a variety of online and live qualifi ers
led to the selection of the competing teams in
Thailand. These were all national champions aiming
to be the Asian (plus a bit of Africa, the Middle East...
oh, and Australia... and New Zealand) representative
for the fi nals at Computex.
CPUs hadn’t been pre-binned but generally
weren’t too dissimilar to each other... except for
Beer came out early

customary, but it’s usually
the harbinger of ‘fail’
one. In a big turn of fate, Team Australia
(dinos22 and Deanzo) picked the strongest
CPU (5GHz compared to everyone else’s
4.1 – 4.2GHz). Few people could moan
after the luck the same team had at GOOC
2008 when an intermittent motherboard
problem left them totally uncompetitive.
Or at MSI’s fi nal where Deanzo and Moloko
suffered from freak set-up issues. dinos22
said of their CPU, ‘it took two weeks for
me to get into this position at home. This
time it’s taken an hour’.
But, under his leadership, they quickly
set up a very-effi cient platform and
consistently posted ever-increasing top
scores across all segments: they even
