AOCC 2008
China rules, but no world records
sus’ version of the overclocking World Cup,
the Advanced OverClocking Championships
(AOCC), took place in Hong Kong’s rather
grotty Dragon Centre from 28th to 29th of July.
Organisers said 3,000 people watched over the
course of two days, though how you count this in a
shopping mall is anyone’s guess.
Day one started with the tournament sponsors
sipping ‘Champagne’ that had been poured
four-hours previously and concluded with China
conquering 19 other two-man national teams
competing in three, 90min benchmark contests:
SuperPi 8M, 3DMark 2001 and 3DMark Vantage.
Day two aimed to break world records when teams,
er, teamed up, but, despite some valiant efforts, no
records tumbled.

While the AOCC signified yet another stride in the
recognition of overclocking, questions regarding
overclocking competition as live format were posed.
Day One
Most eyes were initially on Team Australia which
featured defending champion T_M (once he’d
bothered to turn up) and world number two, pro.
But the Big Man on Campus was FUGGER who led
the toasts and made everyone jealous by borrowing
a Hong Kong-based friend’s air conditioning
unit to cool Team USA’s kit and their hot, lithe,
sweaty bodies. Gigabyte-related hicookie was also
everywhere trying to build bridges between the two
companies* (see Word Association, page 10) while
also helping out giorgioprimo for team Italy.
* May be a lie.
