The darts category is vital for any
retailer who is serious about
selling sports equipment. As one of
the worlds most popular participant
sports, darts is a guaranteed
consumer traffic builder. To assist
in selling darts, here are some
basic questions and answers,
designed to help expand product
knowledge.

Why are darts made from different percentages of tungsten?
The higher the percentage, the slimmer the dart will be, resulting
in increased higher scoring chances. 97% is the highest percentage
tungsten that is commercially produced and 70% is the minimum.
Anything made of a lesser percentage than this will be too bulky for
the player, who may as well continue with brass or nickel silver.
Why do shafts come in different lengths?
Shafts are made of various different materials such as titanium,
aluminium and polycarbonate. The weight and length of the shaft
will dictate how the dart performs in flight. The dart should fly in a
smooth arc. As players have different throwing styles it is sometimes
necessary to change the length of the shaft, to find the correct
aerodynamic path. See Fig.2.
Why do flights come in different shapes?
Wing surface area affects the flight of the dart. Light darts do not
require as much “lift” as heavy models and as a result, a flight with
a smaller wing surface area will be suitable. Medium to heavy darts
(24g and above) will normally require a WSA of 38.5cm 2 or more.
