DEAN QUINN
What inspired you to embark on a career in fashion?
I guess I was about 15. I was at that stage where I was a bit
anxious about what I was about to do with my life. I wanted
to get out of Northern Ireland and would have even if it had
killed me. I thought to myself, ‘‘What industry would I want
to be in?” Immediately I thought fashion or theatre. Very
cliché I know, but it would have been the end of me if I had
to go to an office to work day in, day out.
What or who would be your ideal collaboration?
If I had learned French at a younger age I think my
journey would have been very different. I would hav
given anything to work under someone like Karl Lagerfeld
at the house of Chanel. To see how he works
and manages patterns, draping, embellishment, prin
and all the rest would be truly amazing. I always
think that a great designer always appreciates great
craftsmanship. I would also love to design the costumes
for a Madam Butterfly!
What do you see for yourself this time next year?
I hope to finally have the things in place that will enable
me to create my collection the way I need to. I
am just starting out this season, and my collection is
very small, but when I am doing my full collection I
hope to have all the pieces that make up a company
in house and in place.
Have any unexpected doors opened since your
show?
Yes. I am completely shocked at just how amazing
the fashion industry in London is. I have had
immense support from the British press, Vauxhall
Fashion Scout and many other sources. They have a
really supported me and encouraged me to follow m
dream here.
What do you think St Martins gave you that no
other course could have?
Above anything else it is a great platform for young
designers. People look to Central Saints Martins
twice a year to see what the new “it” thing is and
who the new designers will be. London Fashion Wee
2009 will be in its 25th year with its array of amazin
