Bram Stoker’s Dracula
I love the delicate balance between the deep,
erotic love themes and the dark nocturnal war
anthems – and the fact that every song sounds
mountainous. Turn it off before Annie Lennox
appears on the last track though, for fuck’s sake.

Hellraiser
Being good friends with Doug Bradley, who
played Pinhead in the movie, makes this an
even bigger treat for me. Rich in dark fairytale
splendour, this perfectly accompanies the
hellish, torturous ambience of the film. It’ll
make you check every corner of your room
before you snuff out the candle each night.

Sleepy Hollow
This drips with classic gothicism, ghostly choirs
and that certain chilly autumnal Halloween vibe.
The dark spirit of the forest is definitely in this
one. Danny Elfman has a knack for this
sort of thing – his other great soundtracks
include Nightbreed, Batman Returns, Edward
Scissorhands and The Frighteners.

Halloween
It just wouldn’t be Halloween without listening
to this 1970s chiller with its infamous simplicity
and serial-killer-at-your-back-door vibe. This
repetitive – and genuinely upsetting – music
created by the director of the film makes for
a demented ringtone, too.

From Hell
Another perfect soundtrack for the witching
hour from the cult film starring Johnny Depp
in morbid pursuit of Jack The Ripper through
a fogbound Victorian London horrorscape.
There is the unsettling horror score, the love
themes and the opiate-ridden, drugged-up
ambience of ‘Chasing The Dragon’ to let your
ears have a stab at. Oh, and Marilyn Manson.
