1 OINGO BOINGO
‘Tender Lumplings’
An early cut from film score maestro Danny
Elfman’s gang. It’s 60 seconds of pure creepy
and kooky oompah tomfoolery, and the perfect
opening fanfare for any Halloween party.
Dim the lights and enjoy.
2 R DEAN TAYLOR
‘There’s a Ghost in My House’
Irresistibly fuzzed-out and intense northern
soul that equates memories of lost love with
evil spirits taking residence in one’s abode.
It’s too much of a stomping party anthem to
ever get too deep, though. If you listen with
half an ear you can pretend it really is just
a song about a haunted house.
3 JOHN ZACHERLEY
‘Happy Halloween’
We discovered this through a mix-tape made
for us by a fan. Our research has shown that
Zacherley is essentially a male Vampira, one
of those American ‘Horror Hosts’ to which we
have no real equivalent in this country. He also
made novelty records. This one is a psycho
masterpiece where creaking door sound effects
and unearthly screams do the twist in Norwegian
composer Edvard Grieg’s Hall of the Mountain
King. It should replace ‘The Monster Mash’ as
the staple Halloween party record.
4 THE SHAGGS
‘It’s Halloween’
The first genuinely scary track of the night.
No human being can dance to this. If a bunch
of headless zombies were to start a band, this
is what it would probably sound like. It’s the
perfect floor-clearer for the end of the night
5 THE DAMNED
‘Nasty’
As seen on 1980s TV series The Young Ones, it’s
a breakneck ode to those brilliant films! It’s best
appreciated alongside a visual aid although, if
you don’t have any video nasties playing at your
party, something’s wrong already...
