1 BIOSHOCK
Packed with bowel-loosening moments of
terror that’ll live with you forever. From drugcrazed
mutants to lumbering behemoths in
antique diving gear protecting corpse sucking
girls, Bioshock is the stuff of nightmares.
2 RESIDENT EVIL
The original Resident Evil was a masterclass
in console creepiness, made worse by the rubbish
controls that added a sense of helplessness and
frustration to every scene.
3 HALF-LIFE 2
It’s not a horror game by any means, but the
level ‘We Don’t Go To Ravenholm’ is relentlessly
scary and threatening, with reanimated human
corpses at every turn, each brought to life
by alien parasites feasting on their brains.
4 SILENT HILL
Packed with psychological chills rather
than visceral scares, the first two adventures
are a more effective laxative than a family box
of figs. And when you end up beating skinned
zombie children to death with a lead pipe, the
sense of brutality is overwhelming.
5 HALO
This game is utterly terrifying, especially
when you reach the subterranean layer where
alien life forms the Flood first attack. In the
shadows, as mutant bugs swarms around,
weak-hearted gamers will lose their minds.
