1: Architecture
Regeneration is happening at an exhilarating pace in Glasgow; cranes are
everywhere. Its skyline already tells a story stretching back hundreds of
years and, as gleaming edifices are added, this vibrant town is becoming
one of Europe’s most varied and dynamic cityscapes.
Architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh is one of Glasgow’s most famous
sons. His facades can be spotted throughout the city, notably the iconic
Glasgow School of Art and Willow Tea Rooms. The domed Lighthouse
contains the Mackintosh Interpretation Centre and a reconstruction of the
architect’s own home is found in the University’s Hunterian Art Gallery
(see p9).
Another great local architect is Alexander ‘Greek’ Thomson, who was
nicknamed for the classical influence on his idiosyncratic style. As the city
boomed in the 19th century, a range of buildings sprang up, from Victorian
warehouses in the City Centre to the West End’s sweeping terraces, some
designed by Thomson himself.
