Like its counterpart on the other side of the Clyde, Glasgow’s North
Side is largely a suburban spot. Areas such as Milngavie (pronounced
‘mull-guy’) and Bearsden, which gained some notoriety as the
home of Pop Idol contestant Darius Danesh, are quiet retreats for
pinstriped workers.
The area’s main attraction is the headquarters of the Mackintosh
Church, the headquarters of the society devoted to the influential
Glaswegian architect. The only one of his church designs that made it
off the drawing board, the building has excellent stained-glass and
relief carvings. The wonderful simplicity and grace of the barrel-shaped
design is particularly inspiring.
Across the River
From the West End, Queen Margaret Drive leads northeast across the
River Kelvin to Maryhill. Students mostly come up here for the Murano St
and Wolfson halls of residence, and the green Garscube sports complex
(see p43), where the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine is also located.
West Highland Way
Beginning in Milngavie, Scotland’s favourite long-distance path stretches for
153km through some of the country’s most spectacular scenery to Fort Wil-
liam. The track follows the old drovers’ roads through vast wildernesses such
as Glen Nevis, in the shadow of Britain’s highest peak, Ben Nevis (1344m).
