Bonhomme takes the title in Barcelona
British pilot holds off challenge from Hannes Arch to
claim first World Championship victory
Paul Bonhomme was crowned
2009 Red Bull Air Race World
Champion after another stunning
performance in Barcelona.
Cool Bonhomme was never outside the top
two all season and roared to another first place
finish well ahead of fierce rival – and defending
champion – Hannes Arch, thrilling a record
crowd of 800,000 spectators. Completing the
season on 67 points, Bonhomme’s victory
breaks the cycle of consecutive second place
finishes (in 2007 and 2008) and is the pilot’s
first Red Bull World Championship world title.
Penalties meant Austrian Arch could only
manage fourth place in Spain, finishing an
otherwise impressive season in second place
with 60 points – seven behind Bonhomme.
Australia’s Matt Hall finished ninth on the day,
but it was enough for him to claim third spot in
the overall championship with 36 points – the
best ever points tally for a rookie pilot.
Britain’s Nigel Lamb was rewarded
with his first podium finish of the
season with second place, while
Matthias Dolderer took third.
