Arch triumphs in Abu Dhabi
Sea, sand, scorching sun and high drama in the skies -
it could only be Abu Dhabi and round one of the
Red Bull Air Race World Championship.
Reigning champion Hannes Arch began the
defence of his title in style. The Austrian ace
kept his cool as the cockpit temperatures
topped 40 degrees, flying with pinpoint
precision to claim top spot in the season
opener in Abu Dhabi.
Having finished second to Arch in the previous
two Championships, Brit Paul Bonhomme is
understandably sick of being asked questions
like, ‘So Paul, are you destined to always be
the bridesmaid and never the bride?’ Coming
second behind Arch in Abu Dhabi may delay
his dress fitting a little longer. Still, that’s 10
points in the bag, with a lot more still to play for.
If it’s possible to fly an aeroplane with
Gallic flair, Nicolas Ivanoff does just that.
He hurtles through the air with what at times
appears to be reckless abandon. But his
third place finish shows that the Frenchman
knows what he’s doing. He was plagued by
inconsistency last year – will Abu Dhabi be a
flash in the pan, or can he strike gold in 2009?
