john lewis: “jl, our
new own-brand
range, is flying
out of the store”
Beth Finnigan, menswear
assistant buyer
What are the key trends for autumn?
We’re promoting great menswear basics
and classics this season, such as slim
dark-denim, waistcoats, biker jackets,
white shirts and chunky knits.
Monochromatic colours and clean
lines are very big for the younger market
this autumn, with berry colours, charcoal
grey and butter-soft leather outerwear
for the slightly older guy.
What are your best sellers? Our own
brand JL’s biker jacket has flown out of the
store. The three-ply Italian yarn cashmere
knits in a range of colours from our own

range are also proving popular in both
V-neck and crew neck.
Which is your favourite designer or
brand at the moment? Scotch & Soda,
which is a casual-wear brand from Holland
that is kind of classic but with some
quirky details – for example, some of
the shirts come with their own scarves
attached. It’s also done a great pea coat,
too. Reiss is another label that will be
new for us from November.
Who is the new name to watch? Paper,
Denim & Cloth and 7 For All Mankind – both
are new jeanswear labels for us.
What is autumn’s must-have item?
The black JL chunky-knit cardigan with
toggle buttons.
What is the key accessory of the
season? Scarves – we’ve got them in
every permutation: fine-knit, stripes,
chunky-knit, cable-knit and silk.
What one item should we invest in?
Our own range again: JL’s chocolate
soft-leather four-pocket jacket.

We’re seeing a resurgence of
