century. Henri Dutilleux says of Valery

‘ I went to the rehearsal of his Piano
Concerto for the Left Hand in 1937.
I heard Jacques Février who gave the
first performance [in France], offer Ravel
words of encouragement but Ravel gave
no reply. He was already ill and died later
that year. I was a student so didn’t dare
approach Ravel; little did I know that all
the personalities surrounding him would
become my friends including Février
