Planning
Planning. Get it right from the start
and the whole process of creating your
dream kitchen will stay organised,
exciting and enjoyable.
The best way to start thinking about your new kitchen
is to draw a rough layout. Measure up, then mark out
the current positions of things like doors, windows,
plumbing, sockets, your boiler, stop-cock, gas tap, light
switches and radiators. You can then plan your new
kitchen around these existing features or see what extra
work might be needed to move things around.
Some tips for planning
• Measure the space you’ve got – both along the ceiling
and the floor. Be prepared for uneven walls, corners
that aren’t right angles and difficult areas.
If you need help measuring up, just ask us.
• Start with the fridge, the cooker and the sink. Build
your ideas around these key workstations then plan
in worktop space and storage accordingly – space for
hot pans by the cooker, dirty dishes by the sink and
preparing food by the fridge, for example.
• Collect ideas from magazines of the kinds of things
that you like – kitchen styles, colour swatches, storage
ideas, anything. This not only helps to keep your
project visualised and exciting, it gives our designers a
clearer idea of what you are looking for.
• Don’t forget, existing features can be moved – even
doors and windows if absolutely necessary. Clearly
the more work needed, the bigger the total cost, but
cooker points, sockets and plumbing can be relatively
inexpensive to move.
• Plan around the practical. The best place for a
dishwasher is next to the sink. Large drawers for
pans work best next to the cooker. Cutlery drawers
are more convenient close to the dishwasher or
draining board. You are the chef in your kitchen
– think how you work and plan to make life as easy as
possible for you.
