Patrick makes racing history by taking her firs
Most everyone knew it was coming, and her father was sure it
was imminent. Now Danica Patrick has to answer a new question:
“When are you going to win your next race?”
In her 50th start, Patrick passed Helio Castroneves on lap 198
then cruised to a five-second victory, making her the first woman
to win a major open-wheel race. She and Castroneves were on a
different fuel strategy than the rest of the front runners, who all
had to make late pit stops, leaving it to a duel between the
Andretti Green Racing and Team Penske drivers.
“Finally,” Patrick said in Victory Lane. “This has been a long time
coming. It was a fuel strategy race, but my team called it
perfectly for me. I know I was on the same strategy as Helio
[Castroneves] and when I passed him for the lead, I couldn’t
believe it. This is fabulous.”
With six laps remaining, Scott Dixon had a 3.6s lead. But the
leader had to pit for a splash of fuel on lap 195. Dan Wheldon
and Tony Kanaan had to follow suit on lap 196. That left the door
