Common Industry Terms
Gutter – A water carrying device at the roof edge used to collect rain water
and melting snow from a roof surface. Gutters are manufactured in material
thicknesses starting at .032˝, 24-gauge, G-90 galvanized steel or greater.
Kynar 500 ® or Hylar ® 5000 – An extremely durable 70% resin-based paint
coating chemically known as Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF).
Lap Joint – A seam located at the end of a sheet metal product created by
placing 1-3˝ over (or under) the end of an adjacent section, eliminating the
need for covers or splice plates.
Metallic Finish – A premium paint finish that incorporates metal flakes to
create a sparkling, brilliant appearance.
Mill Finish – Metal in its raw unfinished form without a coating or finish.
Color and/or shade variations can be expected.
Miter (Inside or Outside) – A fabricated accessory sometimes referred to as
a "corner" that is usually installed at the intersection of two walls. It is produced
by cutting or bending two pieces of material and seaming them together.
Nailer – Construction-grade wood attached to a building substrate that is used
as a foundation for fastening steel or aluminum roof termination products
(treated wood nailer).
Oil Canning – The perceived waviness of a section of flat metal that exceeds
the limits for flatness for a given face height (or span) and metal thickness. Oil
canning is inherently found in light gauge, formed metal products, particularly
those products with broad flat areas. Structural integrity is not affected when
oil canning is present.
Outlet – A short metal tube that is installed into an opening in the bottom of
a gutter, collector or scupper. Used as a transition between the downspout
sections and the water collecting system.
Parapet – A perimeter wall that extends higher than the roof level.
Post-Coating – A paint or anodized finish process that is applied to a metal
product after it has been formed into its final shape.
Pre-finished – Materials that are coated with a factory-applied paint (Kynar
500 ® or Hylar ® 5000) or anodized finish prior to sheet metal fabrication. Prefinished
usually refers to flat metal already painted in sheet or coil form.
