What’s so special about you?
AS the indefatigable endmill of fate plunges into the workpiece of
destiny, trailing clouds of coolant and showers of swarf, and leaving only
the witness-marks of history to denote its passage - here comes MACH
again. With the support of co-located shows such as Subcon, the biennial
gathering at the NEC remains unchallenged as the UK manufacturing
sector’s most important gathering, one which MWP is always very pleased
to be a part of. This year we’ll be providing the main focal point for
breaking news at the event - to be transmitted not via a ‘show daily’ - but
instantly on plasma screens around the halls. More of that in later issues.
MACH also means the culmination of the MWP Awards. This competition
was devised well before my time on the magazine, a quarter of a century ago in
fact, as a way of recognising outstanding achievement in production
engineering. The format and principles haven’t changed significantly: ten
independent judges, drawn from industry, academia and the technical press
and representing a range of expertise, will deliberate and decide. However the
categories have been modified over the years to reflect the growing
importance of high value-added production, research and development, the
reduced time-to-market culture, and the influence of health, safety and
environmental pressures on modern manufacturing technologies.
While we encourage all MACH and Subcon exhibitors to consider entering
- on the basis that they are likely to have a message they want to transmit to the
market place, and products or services of which they are proud - the Awards
are open to any company or organisation that develops, supplies, uses or
supports production engineering and manufacturing technology.
Entry is free, and one thing that has changed is that it’s more
straightforward than ever; just go to www.mwpawards.com and use the
downloadable templates for your categories. You may find that some of the
‘Special’ categories offer unexpected opportunities to enter. For example
most suppliers of machine tools and production equipment offer Service
and Support, in many different guises: turnkey installation, tooling or
cutting fluid management, training, maintenance, fast service on spares
and consumables. And since most new installations are put in place to raise
productivity, case studies will often provide a basis for entering the
Productivity Award. For those who have taken steps to make factories safer,
more pleasant and less wasteful there’s also the Health, Safety and
Environmental Practice Award. And if you’ve got some really
groundbreaking and innovative work going on behind the scenes, there’s
the Research and Development Award.
As in previous years, the MWP Awards culminate on the Tuesday of MACH
week with what is always a very enjoyable evening. But it doesn’t end there (or
even at the end of the week); ongoing promotional opportunities will include
detailed editorial coverage of all shortlisted entries, in our July issue and online.
