Oil filtration system maximises efficiency of new tool and cutter grinding capacity
Maintaining oil integrity
AS part of an on-going programme
of continuous improvement to its
manufacturing processes, and to
help improve the company’s
production capacity, tool and cutter
manufacturer Samwell Tooling has
installed an advanced, Vomat FA120
grinding oil filtration system with
built-in chiller. The first installation
of its kind in the UK, it is now
operating efficiently on a new
Walter Helitronic power tool and
cutter grinding machine, at the
company’s facility in Poole.
Samwell Tooling’s MD Ian
Wellman explains: ‘In an effort to
keep pace with the ongoing, high
levels of demand for our products
and services from our automotive,
aerospace, medical and general
engineering based customers, we
have recently made a substantial

investment in a high quality Walter
grinder with full auto-loading
capabilities and in cycle wheel
dressing. To maximise the
efficiency of our new machine tool,
we have purchased the best tooling
and ancillary equipment available,
including our new Vomat filtration
system. The minimal maintenance
requirement of our new Vomat
system has resulted in increased
productive machine time, whilst
the advanced, highly efficient unit
has also been found to substantially
extend both cutting tool and
coolant life.
‘Having also invested in a high
quality grinding oil from Oelheld, it
was important to maintain the
integrity of the oil in order to reap the
benefits that are gained from such

alternatives but felt that the

over and above similar systems as its
filter elements are extremely robust
and not affected by machine
contaminates such as slide-way oil or
hydraulic oil. Samwell Tooling has a

Tooling by Walter Machine Tools,
following the successful installation
of Vomat 2500LPM system in
Walter’s German demonstration
facility, the Vomat FA 120 is an
advanced new class of self
production management
contained, self cleaning filtering
system. With a capability of 120
litres per minute (available up to
2500lpm, the 100% filtration, no
bypass system has a NAS 7 (better
than 0.003mm) filter capability. With
a small footprint and low running
costs (power and air consumption),
the Vomat FA 120 delivers superior
surface finish, reduced wheel wear
and improved stock removal rates.
The ability to condition the oil to
such a high degree of cleanliness
greatly improves machine reliability
and the working environment, at the
same time reducing maintenance
costs and the potential for issues
such as operator skin irritation due
