PLAN AHEAD
Book in advance - The earlier you book the better the savings. You
wouldn’t turn up at the airport without a ticket, so treat train travel
the same way
Avoid train travel at peak times - generally 0700-0930 and
1500-1800 on weekdays. Instead, travel after 1000 and before
1600 for the least expensive options and savings of up to 75%
UNDERSTAND THE SYSTEM
UK rail fares, whether single or return, Standard or First Class, are grouped into the
following three categories:
Advance - The further in advance you book, the cheaper the tickets. Subject to
availability on a fi rst come, fi rst served basis. Rail fares are released 12 weeks
in advance, but may still be available up to the day before departure
Off-Peak - Cheaper tickets for travel on trains that are less busy. These tickets
may require you to travel at specifi c times of the day, days of the week, or on
a specifi c route
Anytime - These are fully fl exible tickets with no restrictions on when you
can travel and are the most expensive tickets. Some fares may also involve
a particular routing. The outward journey must be travelled on the date booked
