My
travelling
life

“I travel pieces for newspapers. I often
50 the last word
travel frequently, usually on business.
My work takes me to many parts of
the world, and I also sometimes write
spend my holidays in France and Italy.
Airports, and the now almost customary delays on the
ground, are awful, and being kept in holding zones over
southern England, even when the plane is late, is pretty
frustrating.
I have to say, I enjoy arriving at my destination
most of all. Travel itself is often pretty grim, with some
notable exceptions. When I was much younger,
I crossed the Atlantic on the great ocean liner, the
Queen Elizabeth, and I was also lucky to travel from
Paris to Istanbul on the original Orient Express in its last
days. I was on my own on both occasions and there was
an undeniable sense of adventure.
I think my favourite place is the island of Bora Bora in
the South Pacific, which I have visited twice and enjoyed
enormously. It is most people’s idea of a tropical
island with a turquoise lagoon, marvellous sailing and
snorkelling and some very good restaurants in the
French colonial style.
I never leave home without a good book, preferably
related to the place I am visiting. I’d like to visit Beijing,
and I am sure it won’t be long before I do.”
