Endless
Summer
Finally, the summer is upon us. Images of hoards of
workers enjoying lunch in the park and executives
carrying their jackets under their arms on the way to
work are sure to bring joy to all. Unavoidably, there is
a sting in every brightly coloured snake’s tail, and while midsummer
is arguably the happiest time of the year (except maybe
Christmas) the June-July issue of European CEO is not entirely
sweetness and light.
Our cover story this month is of Ryanair boss Michael O’Leary.
The world holds mixed views of O’Leary – Is he a monster or a
genius? Either way, controversy and his name go hand-in-hand,
and as they say, no publicity is bad publicity.
To balance our karma, and in an attempt to break from the
usual mantra of doom and gloom, we have extended our profiles
section giving you the ‘low-down’ on the cream of Europe’s
business crop. This month we see ailing Scottish bank, RBS’ new
CEO, Steven Hester. With his bank being in the news as much as
the regular weather report, Hester has a real task to conquer in
picking up after his predecessor, Sir Fred Goodwin. We also profile
the life and times of Sir Anthony O’Reilly who recently announced
his stepping down as the CEO of his media empire, INM on his
73rd birthday.
We’ve also had a look at Conor Foley of spread betting
company, WorldSpreads. He explains that his own loss and
misfortunes inspired him to start his own company which is now
very successful.
Continuing with the theme of positively, we honour the best
in the field of telepresence in our Telepresence Awards. With
companies becoming more conscious of their surroundings,
and air travel being known as real source of CO emissions,
2
telepresence has rapidly grown in popularity as an easy, green
alternative to cross continental meetings.
Clearly, the positives outweigh the negatives, but we’re
susceptible to a moan and grumble every now and then. With that
said, enjoy this overly positive issue and make the most of
the summer.
