CARBON FOOTPRINT
PLANS AFOOT
In 2007 PPA established a Carbon
Footprint Working Group, to
establish an ambitious programme
to co-ordinate cross-industry
activity and provide clear guidance
for members. The group, chaired
by Colette Mahon, production
manager at Redwood, offers the
opportunity to exchange
information and ideas to PPA
members wishing to consider their
own company carbon footprint,
look for examples of best practice
and work on developing guidelines
for the industry to follow.

ALL WRAPPED UP
Publishers are assisting with the
Waste and Resources Action
Programme (WRAP) study into the
use of recycled paper. WRAP is a
Government agency which aims to
encourage business and consumers
to recycle and use recycled products.
The second phase, steered by a
group of representatives from the
magazine, printandpapersectors
isinvestigating case studies where
magazines have used recycled
content paper, their reasons for
using it, any adaptations that had
to be made during the production
process, customer reaction and
sources of supply.
FIT FOR THE FUTURE
DEFRA AND PPA agreed targets for the
recycling of post-consumer
magazines in 2005, the first staging
post of which is 50 per cent of postconsumer
magazines being recycled
by the end of 2007. PIRA
International is currently working
on measuring how far this target has
been achieved. Future targets are 60
per cent by 2010 and 70 per cent by
THE ENVIRONMENT COMMITTEE is a task force with members drawn
across the PPA membership. PPA members are looking at a number
of ways to reduce environmental impact. A big focus is on meeting
the Producer Responsibility Agreement on recycling rates and
understanding the part magazines play in the recycling process
and minimising the industry’s carbon footprint.

‘OXO FAMILY’ GROWS IN SIZE
Some 20 publishers have moved across
to oxo-biodegradable wrapping,
following a‘polywrap’summit of
publishers, suppliers and experts in
the plastic field earlier in the year.
The group met to consider and agree
recommendations on the use of oxobiodegradable
polywrap and also
standards for the bagging of newstrade
titles. This material breaks down
at landfill and is recyclable.
Current activity of the Environment
Committee includes monitoring
and preparing the report for The
Department of the Environment
and Rural Affairs (Defra) on magazine
recycling rates.
