Datron Technology’s ProfitCell combines a five-axis, high speed milling
machine with an automatic workpiece changing unit in one compact system.
Datron Technology (5-axis machining): Stands 5059 & 5599
DATRON Technology is introducing the Datron
ProfitCell at MACH 2008. It provides a cost
effective, complete machining solution by
combining a high speed, five-axis milling
machine, with an automatic work piece changing
unit in one compact system. It is space saving and
efficient, as loading and setting operations are
reduced to a minimum.
The highly precise rotary axis, which operates
as a swivel arm, has a working area of 360
degrees in the B axis, and +/-100 degrees in the A
axis. Workpieces are supported on an insert tool
which is located to a clamping point for precision
repeatability. The integrated workpiece magazine
offers up to 50 places.
Up to nine programmes can be processed
simultaneously leaving staff to do other jobs
rather than watching for when new software
needs loading. Five-side machining, drilling,
tapping operations, in a single simple setup,
without sacrificing quality was the remit which
encouraged Datron to create this machining cell.
Aluminium parts 120 by 135 by 44mm were

required to be machined on five sides by a
customer. that already used three M8 machines
but needed to reduce handling times to stay
competitive with foreign purchased parts.
Datron’s application engineers worked on a
model which would use the existing pick and
place system to reduce handling.
When the research team reviewed this possible
solution, the decision was taken to create a small
single unit that would use existing machine
cabinets and tool changers, but would be a new
product; the ProfitCell was the result. Not only did
Datron manage to increase the possible
component size to 160 by 200 by 70mm, with an
item weight up to 25kgs, but this was achieved
with a footprint of only 4m representing a saving
of 9.5m over the original idea.
All the benefits associated with the Datron
machine range are maintained, such as the XYZ
probe, Windows interface, a simple to use
controller plus Datron Technology’s full back up
and service support.
