Cox & Kings returns to Burma with group and DIY tours
Cox & Kings is reviving group tours
and tailor-made travel to Burma
this autumn in the wake of
pro-democracy leader Aung San
Suu Kyi dropping her opposition to
tourism in the country.
The operator has not featured
the Asian country in recent years
due to unease about the military
regime. However, Suu Kyi, who is in
long-term detention, now believes
tourism can benefit the Burmese
people. She says travellers should
be encouraged as long as they
use private companies without
connection to the military regime.
Senior product manager Nigel
Hosking said: “We have chosen

Cox & Kings will support
local projects in Burma
to work with partners without
connection to the government
and who support projects that
help local communities.
“It is not possible to guarantee
that no money will reach the
government as a result of tourism
– for example, through taxation.
“But by choosing partners
carefully we can minimise
financial gain for the government,
while maximising the benefits for
local communities and allowing
our clients to see the situation in
the country for themselves.”
Escorted tour options include
a 13-day Golden Land of Burma
itinerary from £2,195. The first
departure is on October 8.
