Jefferson Memorial: among Washington’s many monuments
HISTORY
REVEALED
Washington is immersed in history and culture. If
you get a day free, head to the National Mall and
view D.C.’s historical monuments, or visit one of
the Smithsonian’s many galleries or museums
NATIONAL MALL AND
MONUMENTS
Metro: Smithsonian
The National Mall is the place to
get your voice heard. This 1.9
mile-long lawn is America’s public
space, where citizens come to
protest their government, and
many rallies take place to this
day. At one end is Capitol Hill
and at the other stands the Lincoln
Memorial where on these
steps on August 28 1963 Martin
Luther King delivered his “I have
a dream” speech.
In between is the reflecting
pool, and scattered around are
Washington’s great memorials.
The tallest building in the district
is the 555-foot obelisk dedicated
to George Washington. A
free elevator ride takes you to the
top, which offers an amazing
view. There is also the Jefferson
Memorial situated on man-made
inlet Tidal Basin’s south shore,
the Franklin Delano Roosevelt
Memorial, and monuments to
honor the Vietnam Veterans, Korean
War Veterans, and World
War II veterans.
This latter memorial surrounds
the circular Rainbow
Pool and has 56 stone pillars,
each bearing a bronze wreath,
representing the 56 US states and
territories, and 4,000 gold stars
mounted on the Freedom Wall
commemorate the sacrifice of
400,000 Americans who lost
their lives in the war. That’s a lot
to see, so save at least half a day
to take it all in. And if you can’t
escape the halls during the day,
at night it’s still a fabulous view,
as the memorials are floodlit.
The Smithsonian is the world’s
largest museum complex, with
more than a dozen renowned galleries,
museums and the National
Zoo, which you can travel around
easily – and even better news,
they’re all free. The Smithsonian
Institution Center is the oldest of
the Smithsonian Museums (open
8:30am–5:30pm) housed in an
historic castle. It’s a great place to
start your culture trail, as it gives
visitors useful information. Other
highlights in the Smithsonian are
the Smithsonian Arts and Industries
Building, Freer Gallery of
Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery,
National Museum of Natural
History and National Museum of
American History.
