MENU The Holte
A brief history...
‘1897’ is emblazoned above the Holte portals as a record of major enhancements made to the Holte Hotel, as it was
then known. But the building was in existence in the 1870s and probably goes back even further.
It was once a focal point for people who came to the former Aston Lower Grounds, with views of the menagerie,
the gardens, the duck pond and many other entertainment features – and once hosted the visit of Buffalo Bill and his
Wild West Circus. At one time, the entrance to the Lower Grounds entertainment was directly behind the Holte
Hotel – into what is now the Holte End car park.
The Holte Hotel was also a post-match meeting place for sportsmen. The ‘Magnificent Meadow’ was a sporting
adjunct of the Lower Grounds and was the scene of football, cricket, cycling and athletics.
