GLOBES ACTION ON THE TRAVELHUB
It was fantastic to see thousands of
you log on to the travelhub this week
to see the photos from the Globe
Travel Awards 2010.
Kirstie Allsopp, Alan Carr, Stacey
and Danyl from The X Factor, and
Stavros Flatley all appeared on stage
alongside the cream of the travel
industry, who were dressed up to the
nines. Make sure you take a look at the
at the gallery if you haven’t already.
As well as the popularity of the
photo galleries, the travelhub
is developing a chatty community
of members who talk about
anything from looking for a
new job to where to go on
holiday, and from sharing
advice about running an
agency to having a laugh
about customers’ outlandish
complaints.
It’s a great place to meet
other agents and share
your work and travelling
experiences.

LETTER OF THE WEEK
Disabled hotels
need to be listed
I have recently had an
enquiry from a couple,
one of whom uses a
wheelchair and required
a disabled facilities room.
I contacted Thomson and
Thomas Cook to find out
whether they had any
three-star hotels in Majorca
with facilities for wheelchair
users. Both operators gave
me a similar reply, saying that
I needed to pick the hotel and
then they would contact the
resort to check it out.
“Surely,” I replied, “you
must have a record of such
hotels?” They replied no,
with one saying that each
client’s disability is different.
Looking this way round is
like looking for a needle in a
haystack. I appreciate the
differings of disabilities,
but I still don’t see the point
of not keeping a list.
I then contacted TourSpain
by email and within the hour

Holidays with
you in mind?
I have clients who have just
come back from a TUI
holiday with the most
horrendous start!
Delayed from Bristol and
kept on the tarmac for two
hours, my clients were due to
land in Chambery, France,
but instead were diverted
and eventually landed in
Lyon. On landing, they were
kept on the aircraft for
another four to five hours and
had to pay for water. They
were then told that there was
no transport to resort and
were made to sleep on the
floor in the airport. The Red
Cross delivered some camp
beds and blankets! In the

Unaffected Haiti
needs tourists
I am annoyed that many
people are critical of Royal
Caribbean’s plans to keep
selling Labadee in Haiti.
Haiti needs help – all it
can get. It also needs dignity.
While the initial supply of aid
is critical, it is also important
to restore livelihoods.
It is equally important that
those not affected by the
earthquake are not made
victims by tourists not going
there. Only 10% or so of Haiti
is affected.
Agents can help the people
of Haiti by encouraging their
clients to buy Haitian art in
the Dominican Republic and
to go on excursions to Haiti,
to the citadel for example.
