624 LINDAB
In financially difficult times, councils, HAs and architects are faced with the issue of
trying to source high performance building products that not only deliver real value
for money but also meet robust environmental standards. As a result, manufacturers
are being asked to demonstrate their products are based on sustainable resources
and will perform to specification and provide life
costings. Lindab claims plastic gutters and
downpipes cannot comply with these requirements
and is reporting growing demand for its steel based
Rainline rainwater system. Manufactured from 30%
recycled material, Rainline outperforms plastic and
aluminium, and is also lighter and less expensive
than cast iron drainage. Quick and easy to install, it
is available in ten standard colours, as well as plain
galvanised, natural copper and Aluzinc.

A new Children’s Centre in Katesgrove, Reading, has been fitted with Charter-Integr8
security shutters. The project is part of a national programme in which every local
authority designates an area to build a children’s centre. The centre, to be built by
Morgan Ashurst, will enhance an existing community building used for after-school
clubs. The new building includes a crèche and a multi-use
room for seminars which is also hired out for yoga and
other activities. Security shutters, concealed within the
soffit of the building thus eliminating the need for
integrated shutters, were ideal for the centre and as a
result, Charter-Integr8 180C bolt-on security shutters were
specified and installed directly to the structure. The
Charter-Integr8 range of shutters delivers the highest level
of security and offers both built-in and retrofit solutions to
health, education, community and residential projects.

625 DOW BUILDING SOLUTIONS
The new Downe Hospital in Northern Ireland is a futuristic, tiered building that will
offer a range of services to Downpatrick residents. Effective insulation is a vital part
of the building to ensure the hospital keeps its running costs to a minimum and meets
stringent building regulations. As a result, nearly 200m 3 of STYROFOAM roofing
insulation from Dow Building Solutions was chosen for the roof with a combination of
120mm thick ROOFMATE SL-X boards to secure the ballast covering the flat roof area
and 60mm ROOFMATE LG-X insulating
vertical parapets made from STYROFOAM.
ROOFMATE products are unaffected by
conditions encountered on flat roofs, such
as wide fluctuations in temperature or
repeated freeze/thaw cycles. The products
themselves are lightweight and easy to cut
with low water absorption.

629 LEEROSE INTEGRATED SYSTEMS
Two major new business park developments in Greater Manchester are being
protected by security systems from Leerose Integrated Systems. The Merlin Park site in
Trafford Park, Manchester and the Greenvale Business Park in Littleborough have both
involved Leerose on-site from the initial planning stage. A mobile security system
comprising re-locatable cameras and wireless detectors was installed throughout the
initial construction phases to safeguard materials and equipment, whilst the Leerose
system designers developed plans for a permanent Site Watch system. On both sites
external security is provided by cameras,
external PIR detection devices and horn
speakers strategically positioned to provide
optimum protection. The high speed dome
cameras continually patrol the sites and real
time pictures are fed back to a central control
room at Beva’s Rochdale headquarters.

631 GREENDALE CONSTRUCTION
Greendale Construction’s latest project saw the company presented with a very
different challenge – to create a car park at Harewood Avenue School in
Bournemouth without damaging or interfering with protected trees. The job required
Greendale to pay detailed attention to excavation and landscaping while constructing
19 extra car spaces. An arboriculturist specialising in tree care and knowledge
followed Greendale’s progress every step of the way. Work on the car park is
near completion and has been deemed a great success with no apparent detriment
to the retained trees or their roots. Greendale director, Rob Hooker, said:
“Construction companies are often criticised for not paying enough attention to
green issues. This project proves that we at Greendale REALLY DO care about
the environment and are committed to a
greener future.” This recent contract, worth
£163,000, also includes the construction of a
new extension to the school’s canteen.
