466 KEEPING WATFORD AAU
IN PRISTINE CONDITION
Yeoman Shield was awarded the contract to
supply and fix a range of its versatile total surface
protection products, including Yeoman guardian
handrail, bed head protectors, wall panels and door
protection products throughout Watford General
Hospital’s new acute admissions unit (AAU), which
opened in March. Speaking on behalf of West
Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust, Lindsay Macintyre, director of implementation, said: “Yeoman Shield will help
us to keep our AAU in pristine condition, which is a high priority for us.”
467 CONTOUR-ED INCLUSIVITY

range of bathroom and wetroom products for the elderly and
less able to simplify regulatory compliance in domestic,
commercial and healthcare environments. Contour incorporates
anti-bacterial Microban technology in all its step-in, low level
and level access trays as an integral part of manufacture. The
treatment is proven to help infection control and improve
hygiene in between cleaning cycles. In addition, Contour’s
Ecodec environmentally-friendly floor former enables quick and
easy creation of a flawless, level access wetroom floor.
469 METSEC’S ENHANCED
LATTICE BEAM DESIGN
The new composite floor beam from Metsec’s Lattice Beam
Division offers longer spans, integrated shear plates, greater
fire performance and maximum flexibility for routing services.
Fully manufactured off-site to reduce time and risk on-site, the
new composite floor beam provides optimum resistance to
bending and deflection. The top flange is designed to provide
a good bearing for trapezoidal steel deck panels, and
includes factory fabricated shear plates at 60mm centres to enhance bonding with the concrete. Before delivery,
Metsec coats each composite floor beam with an intumescent paint, which gives full one-hour certification.
470 HEALING ENVIRONMENTS
Healthcare environments have become a major area
of development for Hunter Douglas Projects,
whose product range for the health sector has proved
to have many of the benefits required to improve
patient healing environments. It has long been
accepted through evidence-based design (EBD), that
an enhanced healing environment can stimulate the
healing process by improving the comfort factor of
patients’ surroundings. Hunter Douglas Projects offers
a range of chilled ceilings that reduces the risk of Sick
Building Syndrome (SBD) and offers a clean and energy efficient alternative to air conditioning. Its ceiling range
also offers good acoustic properties that can substantially reduce excessive noise levels.
472 RAISING THE INFECTION
PREVENTION BAR
Marshall-Tufflex has released its product
brochure, Bio Trunking Solutions, detailing its
antimicrobial trunking systems. The document
outlines the benefits of an antimicrobial system
when designing or installing PVCu cable
management systems for use in healthcare
environments, schools or sports halls. Bio trunking
solutions, with a silver-based agent mixed in to the
PVCu, are proven to be 99.9% effective against
harmful bacteria with no reduction in effectiveness
if the trunking is scratched or damaged.

468 UNILIN’S MODERN
METHOD
Unilin Systems structural insulated roof panels
(SIRP) allow for more effective use of materials,
speed up construction and help to reduce resource
consumption, thus demonstrating how effective
modern methods of construction can be. Unilin
Systems’ Unipur and Unispan panels take the
panelisation construction methodology to the
more advanced closed panel level, increasing offsite
fabrication. The panels offer good thermal
performance and a finished inner facing, while
also offering a water, weather and airtight
construction, making it easier to predict the U-value
of the completed building.
471 ENHANCING DIGNITY
IN SOCIAL CARE
Updates to the Social Care Insitute for Excellence’s
Dignity in Care Practice Guide 09 are being
answered by Clos-o-Mat. The guide highlights
the difference factors hygiene, toileting and
continence needs can make in retaining and
enhancing dignity and self-respect. The Clos-o-Mat
bidet toilet, manufactured and supplied by Total
Hygiene, is proven to make a positive contribution
towards achieving that dignity in care. The Clos-o-
Mat looks like a conventional WC but incorporates
an integral douche and drier, which eliminate the
need to wipe clean after toileting.
473 HEARTLANDS FIT AND FORGET UPGRADE
Heartlands Hospital in Birmingham has carried out
a fire safety upgrade on the doors in its Outpatient
Department. For the upgrade, Ingersoll Rand’s LCN
Sentronic 4040SE single point hold open door
closers, LCN 4313ME multi point hold open door
closers and LCN 1460DA door closers, were
supplied by Relcross. Having installed door closers
in the past that were not up to the challenge,
Heartlands has had a policy to fit nothing but LCN
door closers since the mid 1990’s. Project manager,
Robert Davey, said: “The beauty of LCN closers is
that they are truly fit and forget. After any initial
adjustments are made, we get no more problems.”
