INSPIRED DIRECTION
One of Britain’s most original directors,
Deborah Warner has produced a
diverse body of thought-provoking
work spanning opera, theatre and
installation. Her theatre work includes
Hedda Gabler and Medea with Fiona
Shaw. For ENO, she directed the first
stage production of Bach’s St John
Passion in 2000 and Death in Venice in
2007.
‘Deborah Warner’s production (of
Death in Venice) is, in many respects,
the best I have seen. It fills the
Coliseum’s vast stage with panache’

HEAVENLY SINGING
A master Handelian, John Mark Ainsley,
returns to ENO to sing the tenor role,
following rave reviews for his performance
in Partenope in 2008. Previous roles at
ENO include the title role in Orfeo, for
which he was nominated for the Olivier
Award for Outstanding Achievement
in Opera, and Jupiter in Semele, which
was broadcast live on BBC 2.
‘John Mark Ainsley sings with unfailing
elegance.’
