MANUFACTURING super high precision taper roller bearings, Gamet
Bearings also offers Q and QK grade bearings. One of few
manufacturers to achieve the outstanding precision demanded by these
quality standards, it is the only one to also provide short lead times on
its bearings.
Q and QK grade bearings, which are used typically by manufacturers
of machines where precise component roundness will be required such
as Danobat, Jones and Shipman and Kellenberger, are those which
achieve a roundness of less than 0.5μm, often as low as 0.3μm. To
achieve such remarkable precision in its bearings, Gamet employs the
latest manufacturing techniques combined with the highest standard
of quality control and inspection throughout its plant.
Director/General Manager of Gamet, Gerry Shrimpton, says: ‘We
strive to do what we do very well. Not all customers require Q or QK
grade bearings but some do, and all require extremely high precision.
To consistently achieve those standards, and to achieve them in a way
which allows us to ensure we can manufacture and deliver bearings to
customers in an appropriate time scale, we maintain carefully
Machine tool precision depends to a large extent on the
quality and accuracy of the component parts - for
example the bearings.

3D laser scanner retrofits now available for i++ compatible CMMs
Fast and accurate
LASER Design Inc. (LDI) announces that I++ compatible CMM motion controllers are
now supported on its laser scanning systems. C Martin Schuster, President of Laser
Design, comments: ‘We have the capability to easily install our high-speed laser
scanners and scanning software on new or existing CMMs supporting the I++ protocol.’
Full motion controller system retrofits are now available with the I++ protocol for the
following systems:
■ Wenzel WPC-2030 controller
■ Brown & Sharpe FBPC and Sharpe controllers
■ Sheffield MP and SMP controllers
■ DEA B3C/LC and TutorP controllers
■ IMS M9 controller
■ Numerex controller
‘The speed and accuracy of Laser Design’s SLP laser probes is easily integrated with many types of conventional CMM inspection systems,’ continues
Schuster. ‘This means tremendous time savings for the thousands of CMM customers worldwide currently using touch probes for inspection and reverse
engineering. With data capture rates of up to 150,000 points per second, our laser scanners are ideal for measuring parts with complex shapes or free-form
surfaces. Adding our laser scanners to existing CMMs is great way for customers to extend the value of their CMM investment.’
LDI has been a leading supplier of ultra-precise, 3D laser scanning systems and services for over 20 years. Used for capturing the 3D shape of objects with
complex geometries and free-form surfaces, Laser Design’s high accuracy, CMM-based and portable laser scanning systems are ideal for 3D scanning
applications involving inspection and reverse engineering of complex shaped plastic and metal parts. The company’s patented laser line-probe technology
dramatically reduces scanning time by collecting data substantially faster and more accurately than conventional metrology technologies. Laser Design
integrates Geomagic software with its laser scanners to provide complete solutions for reverse engineering and inspection applications. Headquartered in
Minneapolis, the company has Regional Technical Services and Support Centers in major U.S. markets, and distributors throughout Europe and Asia. Laser
Design also operates GKS Inspection Services, an in-house service bureau division offering complete 3D scanning, reverse engineering, and dimensional
inspection services. www.laserdesign.com www.GKS.com

controlled and monitored manufacturing processes combined, of
course, with continual staff training and best management practices.
This gives the customer the assurance that our bearings will be right
every time and will be delivered when the customer wants them.’
Gamet manufactures super high precision bearings which have
absolute geometric accuracy and rigorous dimensional precision at its
purpose-built factory in Colchester, Essex. Sophisticated fully automated
machine tool systems are combined with in-process inspection to ensure
repeatable accuracy and minimal cycle times. A temperature controlled
inspection room is fully equipped with all the latest equipment,
including a Mahr measuring machine for the automatic measurement
of concentricity and the provision of essential feed-back information on
the performance of the production machines.
Gamet bearings are manufactured with rotational accuracy better
than ABEC 9/Timken 00, generally accepted as the highest quality
available. Radial run-out for Q grade bearings is ≤ 1.0μm,
QK grade ≤ 0.5μm, and for standard grade ≤ 1.5μm.
