The High Inca Trail
The location of this seven-day trek is
higher, wilder and more remote than
the Inca Trail. Starting in Mollepata,
the trek moves in the shadow of
Salkantay mountain and crosses
the 5,000-metre Incachiriasca Pass

Regulations – the facts:
● Only 500 people a day are allowed
to trek the Inca Trail. Many spaces
are taken by guides, porters and
cooks, leaving about 200 places.
● The trail closes in February for
maintenance.
● Bookings are made via authorised
agencies, to which a nonrefundable
£150 deposit is payable.

Lasting four days and three nights,
the route begins at an Inca shrine
set in a river valley at an elevation
of 3,650 metres. Reaching a dizzying
4,500 metres, trekkers will see
aqueducts, a pre-Inca fortress, a

and the Sun Temple. The route ends
with sunrise at Machu Picchu.
