TRAVEL WEEKLY SAYS
Use your imagination
Martin Couzins
Managing Editor
We are really starting
to feel the effects
of the economic
downturn. In
its revised
forecast, the Confederation
of British Industry this week
predicted that the recession
will run for most of 2009 and
see unemployment peak close
to 2.9 million.
Already we are seeing job
losses across the industry
(page 3) and this week’s
news of job cuts at Travel
2 and Avis are another
blow to the industry.
If the economic
indicators are correct,
we will see more
signifi cant job losses in
the coming months –
especially if the peak
sales period fails to
deliver enough business.
What is heartening is
how agents are innovating

Facing a huge gap in fl ights from

fee – redeemable if they book the
holiday – if she spends more than
half an hour with them. Denney
says the scheme has eliminated
time-wasters and she hasn’t lost a
single booking.
And remember travel agent Harv
Sethi’s success at charging customers
for brochures? The scheme contributed
to a 20% increase in bookings.
Other agents with imaginative ideas
include the winners of the Travel Weekly
Southeast Agent Excellence Awards
(page 4 and www.travelweekly.co.uk/
agentawards) and 30 winners from our
other three regional awards this year.
Each of the agents has worked harder
and smarter to win and retain business.
Innovators will succeed. If you
are doing something new that is
working then share it with the industry
– now is the time to learn new ways
of doing business.
