TRAVEL WEEKLY SAYS
Obama brings hope
Penny Wilson
Editor-in-Chief
Barack Obama’s election as
US president this week
provided the world with a
welcome ray of light amid
the dark days of recession.
Not only will he become America’s fi rst
black president, but he commanded
the biggest turnout of voters in
American history.
Let’s face it, politicians of this
calibre come along only once in a
while – even once in a lifetime –
and he’s nothing but a welcome
sight in a world currently fi lled
with mass job losses, business
and country failures, and
bankruptcies (see page 2). He
faces a fi nancial mess.
Still, at last, we have in
place a US leader who
seemingly recognises
other parts of the
world, their cultures
and subtleties.
That’s got to benefi t
world cohesion
and trade.

What has this got to do with travel?
Obama’s policies are not going to ease
security at US airports, or improve the
way tourists are welcomed to the US.
His pledge to draw US troops out of Iraq

may increase
security hurdles,
but the change
and image of
America that
Obama brings
will be good for
economics,
diplomatic relations
and tourism as more
people look more
favourably upon
this mighty

luck to him.
