Turnkey lift for Qualiturn
QUALITURN Products has installed a turnkey
design lift from Cargo Storage Systems. The
Hertford firm offers over 10,000 hours per
month capacity on an extensive range of CNC
turning machines, with over 250 customers in
the aerospace, automotive, surgical and
electronic sectors. Qualiturn approached Cargo
with a requirement to store metal bar, in a
multitude of diameters and lengths; in addition
to the considerable weight storage capabilities of
the lift, Qualiturn needed a facility whereby a
tray of stored bar could be removed on a trolley,
for transportation within the factory.
The 7.5m high Cargo lift has been
manufactured to accommodate up to 500kg of
product or material per tray, and an integral
divider system has been incorporated to section
the metal bar material on the trays. The Lift also
has an external presentation port which allows
individual trays to be removed, using a wheeled
unit designed by Cargo, whereby trays of
product or material can be manoeuvred easily
around Qualiturn’s extensive production facility.
Qualiturn’s Managing Director, Nick
Groom says: ‘With our customers asking for
reductions in component prices and improved
deliveries, Qualiturn had to review current
working practises and its systems. In looking
we found we could improve our material
stock level monitoring, reduce machine down
time, and improve further on our material
tractability records. In doing all of these we
identified the need to improve material
storage manual handling. We are now

controlling stock levels of raw material down
to the last 1/4 of a bar, seeing where every bar
goes, who takes it and when. Results are
recorded and integrated with our current
computer system in real time. We have also
increased our onsite metal security, making
material unavailable unless you have a
registered thumb print.
‘Floor space is at premium; by installing the 4
by 4 by 7.5m high vertical lift we have made
room for two more machines, which will in
turn help to reduce lead times to our customers,
and increase turnover, thus helping to pay for
the new Cargo Lift.’ The Cargo Lift is a computer
controlled vertical lift, storage and retrieval
system. On command the lift transports selected
items to and from the operator, improving
productivity, increasing picking speeds and
reducing costs with trays that can move
vertically up to 2.3 metres per second. The builtto-order
Lifts are available in heights of 5 to
20m, and widths of 2 to 3.6 metres.
