Huron specified
for composites
GKN Aerospace Transparency Systems
confirmed an order for a high specification
Huron KX45five 5-axis bridge-type
machining centre supplied by Fortron UK.
This significant investment is the first Huron
machine tool purchased by the Bedfordshirebased
Transparency Systems division of GKN
Aerospace, which is a technology and
development centre for the manufacture of
military canopies, together with aircraft icing
protection systems and cockpit lighting.
Engineering Services Lead, Kevin Darcy, said:
‘The Huron KX45five will be used to produce
composite aerospace ice protection systems
(IPS) flight components for the latest
generation civil and military aircraft. These
parts, like all of our composite products, are
designed using well proven principles
supported by state-of-the-art computational
techniques.’ www.fortron.uk.com
Delcam hails 2008 as ‘best ever’
CNC systems
steal the show
THE Anilam and Acu-Rite CNC and DRO
systems displayed at MACH attracted ‘an
extended list of very good quality enquiries’
from visitors - but Heidenhain's Retrofit
Products & Marketing Manager Phil Goulding
ended his week at the NEC on a high when
machine tool supplier RK International
Machine Tools walked onto the stand and
placed an order for eight CNC systems. The
deal was for seven Anilam Series 3000 and an
Acu-Rite MillPwr CNC - all destined for RK’s
cost-effective yet highly-productive Europa
Milltech 5000 turret milling machines. ‘As the
week wore on we saw we were taking more
leads than we did at MACH 2006 and that
was a good sign’ commented Goulding, ‘but
the RK order was the icing on the cake.’ RK’s
managing director John Schwarz reported
that four of the systems were for Milltechs
scheduled for imminent delivery to
customers; the remaining systems were for
stock, reflecting the company’s continual
growth and confidence in the future.

First morning order
for Citizen
HAVING a projected order book of around £1.5 million
and feed back from customers in the aerospace, brewing
and marine sectors that further contracts were being
placed with almost 90% of work out of S130 stainless steel
bar, Teknequip of Harlow used the opportunity of
MACH 2008 to place an order for a Citizen M32-V topof-the-range
sliding head auto. The order was placed by
11:00 am on the first day of the show by John Hunt,
General Manager who said: ‘We already have one Citizen
M32 and a smaller capacity L20 machine installed which
together have saved us between 50 to 60 per cent on our
previous turn-mill
cycles using fixed
head lathes. However,
we still took the
opportunity to
compare machines
from other suppliers.’

DELCAM’S UK Sales Manager Mark Corrigan reported that this year’s event generated more enquiries, from a higher-quality audience, than any
previous show in the series of biannual events. If anything, the exhibition was too busy at peak times. ‘We had people queuing up for
demonstrations on Wednesday morning,’ he said; ‘I can’t remember the last time that happened at a UK exhibition.’ Part of the reason for
Delcam’s success was stated to be the much broader range of machining software now offered by the company, following its series of acquisitions
over the past three years. www.delcam.com
Dugard Eagle key to
EBS expansion
THE second
day of the
MACH 2008
show at the
NEC in
Birmingham
was scouting
day for team
leader and
application
engineer from EBS Automation of Carmarthenshire.
They were seeking a combination of specification and
price for a vertical machining centre (VMC) that
would enable the company to achieve its ambition of
using its toolmaking based skills to diversify the
business into subcontract machining. According to
Mike Evans, managing director, the shortlist was
topped by the first showing at an exhibition of the
Dugard Eagle XP1600 bridge-type VMC and when he
and Laurence Wood, Business Development Manager,
went next day, not only was the machine package ideal
but the attention to detail and structure of C Dugard of
Hove created an air of confidence that resulted in an
order placed on the stand. www.dugard.com

600 Group’s
buoyant MACH
TEN machines were sold from the 600
Centre stand during the show, and both
the Electrox and Pratt Burnerd
International/Crawford Collets stand
enjoyed more activity than at the last
MACH, with Crawford Collets selling a
collet chuck within fifteen minutes of the
show opening. Over 1200 serious
enquiries were received for 600 Group
products. Marketing Director Stephen
Le Beau said: ‘We were extremely
pleased with the results from this MACH
– there will be no difficulty in justifying
our substantial 5-stand presence at the
show. All our companies performed
well and we found it a very buoyant
show, with visitors confident in the
future of their manufacturing operations
in the UK.’ www.600group.com

placed - one by long term customer
Sparta prior to the exhibition, which
ended up being one of the machines
on show - its second Byspeed 5.2kW.
To date this company has invested in
eight Bystronic laser cutting systems,
representing an overall investment of
in excess of £2.75m.
