Snowbombing
Over in Austria, by far the largest of the mountain festivals, Snowbombing,
will be celebrating its 10th birthday from March 28 in Mayrhofen.
This year’s festival is headlined by Fatboy Slim (rehab permitting) but also features
an eclectic mix of acts including Annie Mac (pictured), Biffy Clyro, Dizzee Rascal,
Mylo, Reverend and The Makers alongside one of the inventors of hip hop, the
legendary Grandmaster Flash, who is returning to live action this year on the back
of his first album in 20 years, The Bridge: Concept of a Culture.
The festival will be launched by the Snowbombing Rally, which will see around
100 cars descend on the town for a fancy dress procession after completing
a cross-country treasure hunt.
Gareth Cooper, director of tour operator Outgoing, which organises the annual
event, says Snowbombing has come a long way since its launch when it consisted
of a couple of club nights. It has only really been described as a festival for the
past two years. “It had to reach a certain level to be described as a festival,” says
Cooper.
The week-long event attracts around 4,500 revellers from the UK and it takes over
the entire resort and offers myriad different venues in addition to bars and clubs
including a mountain stage, the Arctic Disco in an igloo, which is accessed by
Austria’s highest cable car, in an Alpine forest clearing. “We want to try and make it
special,” says Cooper.
“Combining the magic of a school trip with a UK festival atmosphere.”
Snowside was going to be The Secret Garden’s ’s first venture in to the Alps with XFM
show The Remix - but it got credit crunched. The he organisers blamed poor ticket
sales on the current economic climate and the pound-euro exchange rate
and pulled the plug.
