TRAVEL WEEKLY SAYS
Where there’s a will…
Martin Couzins

This week’s World Travel
Market was all about
coming together: the global
travel and tourism industry
together on a global stage
to talk shop, share experiences,
announce developments, sign deals
and look to the future.
Clearly the future is a cause for
major concern. As Thomas Cook
chief executive Manny Fontenla-
Novoa told Travel Weekly, the
2009 peaks period will be
tough, warning agents they
will have to fi ght and work
for bookings like they have
never done before.
It was heartening to see
attendees, exhibitors and
speakers conducting
themselves in a businesslike
manner. There was a
lot of energy and
celebration, but there was
less fl amboyance than in
previous years.
This year it was all about

getting back to the basics and doing
them right to survive the coming
months. It was about a positive attitude
to business and business development.
“For the global travel
industry, the way
ahead is to tackle
these issues
together”
WTM chairwoman
Fiona Jeffrey hit the right
note by focusing on
those issues –
outside of
economic woes –
that continue to
challenge the
industry. And by
calling on the
industry to
come together
to provide
leadership and
solutions. “It’s

industry loses sight of other major
industry challenges such as sustainable
development, global warming and
poverty reduction. They cannot, and
should not, take a back seat –
regardless of the situation.
“Just as they have agreed a global
approach to address the meltdown,
this is a time – perhaps more than ever
before – for the international travel
industry to seek a global approach, and
demonstrate co-operative leadership.”
Clearly there is a will to make a
difference. This week, for example,
Sandals launched the Sandals
Foundation to help improve people’s
lives and the environment in
communities surrounding its
properties. Turn to page 18 and you
will see how a Travelife project is
helping save water in Cyprus.
And where there is a will, there
is a way. And for the global travel
industry, the way ahead is to tackle
these issues together.
