Tomography combines with metrology
AFTER agreeing an exclusive UK Partnership agreement with Carl Zeiss
Industrial Metrology, EuroPac will be offering a powerful computer
tomography service with the use of the Carl Zeiss Metrotom. In addition to
inspecting the structure of material, this new system can gauge external
features, and make visible and measure the most intricate of internal
attributes of workpieces - normally inaccessible to probing or optical
sensors. From gathered component data EuroPac’s Carl Zeiss Metrotom
permits the generation of CAD models.
This symbiosis of computer tomography and traditional metrology is
known as metrotomography. In this ground-breaking process, a computer
tomograph uses x-rays to non-destructively measure the interior and
exterior of complex and small workpieces and then very accurately display
the results as a clear 3D image. The procedure is similar to the x-ray
technology used in medicine. X-rays penetrate an object and display it on a
suitable detector. The details of the object appear as a 2D image in varying
intensity depending on the geometry and absorption properties involved.

Extreme accuracy in
harsh environment
PARKER Precision ion handles contracts
ranging from prototypes to medium and
even large production runs. Most work is
for the petrochemical industry. A rigorous
‘in-house’ inspection policy ensures that operators take
responsibility for the quality of their own output. Also all production
is subject to a thorough final inspection regime. As operators often
need to take extremely accurate internal measurements of
components within a harsh manufacturing environment, the need
for a shop-floor proof range of fluid resistant bore gauges was
identified.
Company owner Maurice Parker found the solution in Bowers’
fluid-resistant XT Xtreme Digital rage. ‘As our aim is to ensure the
absolute quality of our components at every stage of manufacturing,
measurements often need to be made whilst components are still
located within a machine-tool,’ he explains. ‘The presence of oil,
coolant and water means that, despite the great care taken, normal
digital bore gauges would not stand-up to prolonged operation in
this hostile environment. I found the answer in Bowers’ XT Xtreme
Digital Bore Gauges. Having invested in a range covering sizes from
6 to 50mm, we are now able to take accurate measurements in
previous no-go areas for digital measuring instruments. The gauges’
shop floor-proof characteristics, accuracy and ease and speed of use
mean that we will soon be adding to our existing range.’
