Obituary: Tom Pailor
IT is with sadness that
the board of directors
at JJ Hardy & Sons
announces the
passing away of Tom
Pailor following a
short illness. He
joined the family
business in 1956 at
the age of 16 and
became managing
director seven years later. In subsequent years
he moved the business away from its roots in
brass founding and into the world of CNC
machining, investigating new technologies and
manufacturing methods along the way. Tom
Pailor was also prominent for his charity work.
He was the founder of Hartlepool-based
sponsored bike ride Cycle4Life - in 2007 he
rode from Lands End to John O’Groats; and
last year undertook his most arduous
challenge, cycling from Calais to the
Mediterranean in 16 days on behalf of the Jack
Smith Trust Fund. His son Andrew took over as
Managing Director of JJ Hardy in 2002.

Extra CNC Appreciation Days at XYZ
DEMAND for places on XYZ Machine Tools’ free CNC Appreciation Days has prompted several
additional dates. Each CNC Appreciation Day takes place at one of the four regional showrooms -
Burlescombe (near Tiverton), Waltham Abbey, Blackburn and Nuneaton - and is strictly a ‘no sales
pitch’ event. According to Mike Corbett, XYZ’s Manager, Applications and Training, the emphasis is
on demonstrating to non-CNC users that the technology is as relevant to small batch and
prototype/one-off machining as it is to longer production runs. ‘The focus at these events is on
making the most of the time available by tailoring the day’s agenda to suit the individual, which is
why we limit attendance to a maximum of six people from up to three companies.’ Sessions are
scheduled for 15, 29/07; 12, 26/08; 30/09; and 14 and 28/10.

Classic investment in new Doosans
NOTTINGHAMSHIRE-BASED subcontract specialist
Classic Precision Engineering has acquired two new
Doosan CNC machines supplied by Mills CNC. The Lynx
220B 2-axis lathe and a DNM 500 VMC (4th-axis-ready),
were installed at the company’s Kirby-in-Ashfield facility
in June 2009, and are being used to manufacture highprecision,
complex parts (one-offs and small batches right
through to medium-to-high volumes).
Says Managing Director Russell Beastall: ‘We have a good
relationship with Mills and value their involvement in our
company. Doosan machine tool technology has helped us
improve our productivity and increase our manufacturing
flexibility enabling us to grow our business. And the Mills
technical and service back-up we receive is second to none.
