PricewaterhouseCoopers
director Ian Oakley-Smith said last
month that the number of travel
company insolvencies was up 13%
on the previous year, and warned
the situation would get worse as
the weakened pound continues to
put consumers off visiting many
overseas destinations.
Here are some of the other
events that helped shape the
travel industry in 2009.
THE GLOBE TRAVEL AWARDS
January: The 2009 Globe Travel
Awards set a new record with
52,500 votes cast by travel agents
and consumers. The night
proved just as successful with
1,200 guests gathering at the
Grosvenor House Hotel, where
comedian Michael McIntyre
presented the 48 awards, while
soul band Rose Royce provided
the entertainment.
